For those of you who saw the Devils/Flyers shootout tonight, the Devils ended up with a win but only after Danny Briere's questionable goal in the second round of the shootout. Moving in towards Hedberg, Briere came close to stopping (although it looked like he stopped to me) and changed direction, moving around a poke-checking Hedberg. Having pokechecked, Hedberg left the goal open and Briere scored an easy goal.
Pete DeBoer was furious and the goal was reviewed but still stood after the review. In his post game interview he said that his understanding of the rule was that a player can not fully stop like Briere did but that he "is a coach not a crossing guard" with a smile. The Devils came out with an awesome victory by the end of the night, but the goal is definitely questionable. My belief is that he did stop, but I do have faith that the group in Toronto who reviews plays take it very seriously and do a good job.
The NHL's explanation is as follows: "Video review upheld the referee's call on the ice that Daniel Briere kept the puck in motion and that the puck never came to a complete stop and thus it was a good goal. " I'll have to see what the official rule is for this scenario, I thought the rule was that the player had to keep moving forward.
With all that said, what do you think?
