The Devils were down 2-0 in the Verizon Center against the Capitals, but that didn't stop them like usual. They rallied with the second line's now favorite play, a quick draw from Elias to Sykora while Zubrus pushes the winger out of the way. This leaves Sykora to shoot a laser past Neuvirth on the glove side.
Next an unlikely hero ties the game, as Bryce Salvador passes to Ryan Carter who redirects the puck pass Neuvirth from the high slot. I've got to say I didn't know much about Carter when he came to the Devils, but I absolutely love him. He plays hard every single night and knows he has to work hard to stay on the roster. He takes the body, makes good decisions, and as we saw last night he can add some scoring when needed. Submitted my vote in DC: great pickup for the Devils.
In the overtime period the Devils had the Caps in their zone for the majority of the time, the pressure was outstanding. There were awesome keep-ins by the defense, and great work around the boards to win the puck in scrums. The only legitimate scoring chance in my eyes was when the Devils left Wideman all alone while chasing the Caps into the opposite corner in the defensive end. Wideman creeped down near the circle and let off a nice shot in a bang-bang play, but Moose had him all the way.
Next comes the shootout, and the two top guns for each team score, Parise and Ovechkin. Tied after three rounds, Backstrom gets stopped by Hedberg and here's where the end of the game starts. Coach Pete DeBoer was stuck between David Clarkson, a player he loves who he coached in juniors, and Petr Sykora, a veteran who can succeed in high pressure situations. So what does he do? Ask Adam Oates of course!
Adam Oates goes with Clarkson, and Clarkson does a beautiful deke to the backhand and scores top shelf. It was a gutsy win for the Devils, another one where they came back from a 2-0 deficit and won in the shootout. With all that said, a few notes:
-Parise's in a bad slump right now. I'm not sure why he isn't producing but this can't go on for much longer. On the flip side he is 4/5 in shootouts this year, and the only shootout the Devils haven't won was the shootout where Parise didn't score.
-Hedberg is one big moose. He's reliable night in and night out and looks even better than last year. He's earned a respectable amount of games this season, and I think a 52-30 split is very likely for the season.
Next up the Devils go to Boston to take on the Big Bad Bruins. The Bruins have been on quite a roll as of late, so this should be a good one. Check out the Weekly Footage page to see what Lucic did to Miller and then what Miller had to say about it afterwards. Hint: They had to bleep it out quite a few times.
